They're Coming! Are You Ready?

That's right, tryouts are almost here! Are you ready for them? Do you know what you need to do to be ready? How hard are they going to be? What are they going to expect? How are they going to be run?

Cheat Sheet Section for JV
WHAT TO WEAR: athletic clothing, hair tied back, socks, shinguards, cleats
WHAT TO BRING: mouthguard, field hockey stick (if you have one), filled water bottle
WHAT TO EXPECT: You will arrive at tryouts and you will sign in at the front table. The person there will give you a tryout number. You will come over to the benches where a bunch of other girls will be, and you will put on your cleats/shinguards if you haven't already. You can stretch some, (although we will do a big stretch later) and find a partner and start passing the ball to warm up! The coaches will instruct you from there. The basic layout of tryouts is as follows: sign in, coaches' speeches, team warm up, team stretch, water break, divide into groups, drills, water break, drills, water break, scrimmage, team cheer.
WHAT TO DO: You don't have to know everything for JV; We want to see that you are willing to learn. Show me that you're a team player and you WANT to make the team. We can teach skills, but we can't teach personal drive. To sum it up, just play your hardest, ask if you don't know how to do something, and try to learn it when we explain it.
HOW TO BE PREPARED: Please be able to run 1 mile without stopping. I cannot in good conscience, put you on a team where you will be expected to play an hour long game of hockey if you are incapable of running 1 mile. Other ways to help yourself be prepared are summer camps! SGHS provides a beginner's camp as well as many other camps, all of which will help tremendously.

Cheat Sheet Section for Varsity
1. (note to returning players) You know what I expect. You know how in shape you should be. You know how I feel about tardiness.
2. (to new/transfer students) The ways I will coach JV and Varsity will be extremely different. JV is a learning team; Varsity is a prepared team. To tryout for Varsity, you must be able to run one mile without stopping. However, please do not think for a second that to make Varsity all you will have to do is complete that mile. Every member of the Varsity team will be able to play a full, hour long game. During each half of the game, you will run around 3 miles in varying paces. I will expect you to be able to sprint, jog, run, dribble the ball up and down the field, drive, choke drive, complete passes, stop balls, and score penalty strokes. This year we will be working on specific field plays and corner scenarios, and the basics will need to be mastered to complete them.

Thank you and good luck! Please call/email/etc. if you have any questions
