SGHS @ Varina High School, 12-0 Victory!

As everyone at SGHS and Benedictine knows, tonight is the big Tucker vs Benedictine game. The girls wanted the night off to go support the Cadets. I struck a deal with them; win thursday's game against Varina by 1 more point than you won last time, and don't get scored on, and we can skip Friday's practice. (Last game, if you check below, the Gators beat Varina by 9 points.) I wanted an even 10 points this game. Motivated by this deal, here are the results of yesterday's game...

The Gators started with the ball and they started out strong! The ball was inches away from the goal inside of 45 seconds. Curtin ('12) scored the first goal of the game with an assist by senior captain McSweeney ('10) all the way from defense. The Gators had some trouble finding a second goal until senior captain Zacharias ('10) found the back of the net all by herself. Curtin ('12) and Phipps ('12) would have scored the third goal of the game, but it was denied since the Varina goalie had equipment issues. The final goal of the half was scored by Zacharias ('10). With only three goals scored in the first half, it was looking like we would have practice on Friday. The team revamped at half time and discussed their issues, along with a sideline performance by their goalie. The Gators came ready to play in the second half. Zacharias ('10) was on fire, and scored the first two goal of the second half. From the wings, Albright ('11) came up with the 6th goal, assisted by Curtin ('12). Zacharias ('10) came back for the seventh goal, assisted by Caudill ('12). Curtin ('12) came back for the 8th goal of the game and her second of the day, assisted b y Zacharias ('10). Zacharias ('10) took a hard shot at goal and the ball got stuck in the goalie's pads. The referees called a stroke and teams set up to watch. Zacharias took a hard and fast stroke under the armpit that went sailing into the back corner of the net to clench the 9th goal of the game. Soon after, Mullen ('11) came up with the 10th goal of the game, assisted by Curtin ('12). Practice was officially canceled for Friday, but the Gators didn't stop there! Phipps ('12) came up with the 11th goal, assisted by Mullen ('11). The timer stepped onto the field as the clock was winding down. With less than ten seconds on the clock, recently pulled up Wolpert ('13), scored her first Varsity goal in her first official game as Varsity player! The goal was assisted by Curtin ('12) who had 2 goals and 3 assists for the day. Harlan ('11) made a beautiful defensive save, McSweeney ('10) and Budi ('12) kept the ball in our 50, and both goalies, Wolpert ('10) and Curtin ('11) had one goalie save. The real star of the game was Zacharias ('10), who scored 6 out of 12 goals and had 1 assist.

The Gators go on to play in the Steward Invitational at Steward School on Saturday at 9:30am. Come out and support the Gators!
