Varsity Gators vs Glen Allen Jaguars

The Gators won their first scrimmage of the season last night! As usual, I made a deal with the Varsity ladies, they needed to score 6 goals, get in 4 reverse sweeps, and 2 drag flicks. If they got all of that in, I would take JV and Varsity to 711 for slurpees on Friday. They exceeded the goals and expectations, so it looks like we're getting slurpees after all! Let's recap how it all went down:

With our star sweeper and senior captain Harlan ('11), out of commission last night, the Gators knew they were going to have to pick it up. The Gators started with the ball first, and went hard. Within minutes, center forward, Curtin ('12) found the back of the goal, assisted by left mid, Caudill ('12). Curtin ('12) knows her reverse like the back of her hand, and really threw the Jaguar goalie for some loops during the entire game! The Gators looked strong, and came back with another goal, scored by senior captain, left wing, Albright ('11), assisted by right wing, Phipps ('12). Albright's ('11) shots on goal are deadly and her accuracy was dead on, all night! The next goal was scored by Caudill ('12), for her first official score of the night, off of a corner. Caudill ('12) is a master at corners. The next goal, and last one for the half, was scored again by Caudill ('12) off of a corner, assisted by a hard shot from captain Albright ('11). While our offenders and midfielders kept the ball in the Jaguar 50 for most of the half, we were not without our scares! Defender, Budi ('12) was all over our 50, keeping the ball in check and breezing past Jaguar players like it was nothing. She kept our goalie, Wyatt ('11) bored, which is never a bad thing! Puccinelli ('13), DeBell ('13), and Wolpert ('13) rotating in and out of midfield and defense, were able to get in some beautiful fastbreaks and perfect passes to our offenders, which really helped bump up the score. Morris ('13), Puchalski ('13), and Whitlock ('13) were thrown in some positions they had never played before, and handled the pressure beautifully! That is the mark of a truly talented hockey player! McHugh ('12) and Yudkin ('12) played midfield and connected some beautiful passes to our offenders. In the second half, the first goal was scored by Phipps ('12), assisted by Caudill ('12). Budi ('12) saved us a myriad of times! Goalkeeper, Wyatt ('11) got in 2 saves, for a shutout game! The second goal of the second half, and the final goal of the game, was scored by Phipps ('12) and assisted by DeBell ('13).

All of last year's Varsity players have stepped it up tremendously, and all of the new Varsity players are earning their playing time by leaps and bounds! It was a great first game, and a great first victory! We learned a lot about what we need to improve, and what we know how to do!

Come out and support the JV Gators as they enter their first game and tournament, on Saturday at Collegiate! They will take on Grafton, Collegiate Gold, and Collegiate Green! Varsity's next game is on Monday versus Covenant School!

Last thing: A special thanks to all of the JV players who came out and supported Varsity!
